Test QR codes on ordinary phones

A design can scan perfectly on the owner’s newest phone and still frustrate customers using another device. A small test across ordinary cameras gives more useful evidence than repeatedly testing the same setup.

A practical workflow

  1. Use different devices

Try at least two available phones with their normal camera apps. Avoid specialist QR tools that customers are unlikely to install.

  2. Vary the conditions

Check the distance, light and angle customers will encounter. Include the actual printed version rather than only a screen image.

  3. Verify the page

After scanning, confirm the business, language options and final destination. A fast scan to the wrong page is still a failed test.

Avoid this mistake

Do not ask customers to install a scanner simply to compensate for poor print quality.

What to check

Record which conditions fail and change the artwork or placement before publishing more copies.

Test the whole physical journey

Check both the printed code and the page behind it. A successful scan is only the entry point: the customer still needs to recognise the business, describe an experience and understand the Google handoff. Use the final material under ordinary lighting. Keep a copy of the approved artwork so a replacement does not accidentally introduce a different destination.

Preserve a QR code’s clear margin →

The empty area around a QR helps a camera distinguish the code from its surroundings. Logos, captions and decorative borders should not crowd that space,.
